1. The Tempter
Gen. 3:1 The serpent was the shrewdest of all the
wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God
really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”
Acts 5:3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, why have you let
Satan fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, and you kept some of the
money for yourself.
James 1:13-14 And remember, when you are being
tempted, do not say, “God is tempting me.” God is never tempted to do wrong,
and he never tempts anyone else. 14 Temptation comes from our own
desires, which entice us and drag us away.
Luke 22:33-34 Peter said, “Lord, I am ready to go to
prison with you, and even to die with you.” 34 But Jesus
said, “Peter, let me tell you something. Before the rooster crows tomorrow
morning, you will deny three times that you even know me.”
1 Cor. 10:12
If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall.
2. Divine Armor
Eph 6.10-16 A
final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.11 Put on all of
God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of
the devil. 12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood
enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against
mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly
places.
13 Therefore, put on
every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time
of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing
firm. 14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body
armor of God’s righteousness. 15 For shoes, put on the peace that
comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. 16 In
addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows
of the devil.
3. The Way of Escape
Luke 21:36 Keep alert at all times. And pray that you
might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son
of Man.”
1 Cor.10:13 The temptations in your life are no
different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow
the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will
show you a way out so that you can endure.
4. A Test of Faith
James 1:2-3 Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles
come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. 3 For you
know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.
1 Peter
1:6-7 So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though
you have to endure many trials for a little while. 7 These trials will
show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies
gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith
remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and
honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.
5. The Help and Sympathy of
our Tempted Lord
Hebrews 2:18 Since he himself has gone through
suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested.
Hebrews 4:15 This High Priest of ours understands our
weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testing’s we do, yet he did not sin.
6. Our Divine Example
Matthew 4:10 “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus
told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the
Lord your God and serve only him.
7. The Victor's Crown
James 1:12 God blesses those who patiently endure
testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God
has promised to those who love him.
