1. The Need of Service
John 4:35 You know the
saying, ‘Four months between planting and harvest.’ But I say, wake up and look
around. The fields are already ripe for harvest.
2. The Call and Response
Isaiah 6:8 Then I
heard the Lord asking, “Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who
will go for us?” I said, “Here I am. Send me.”
Matthew 4:19-20 Jesus
called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for
people!” 20 And they left their nets at once and followed him.
Matthew 21:28 “But
what do you think about this? A man with two sons told the older boy, ‘Son, go
out and work in the vineyard today.’
3. A voluntary Offering
Acts 9:6 Now get up
and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”
4. The Spirit of Service
Psalms 100:2 Worship
the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy.
Luke 10:17 When the
seventy-two disciples returned, they joyfully reported to him, “Lord, even the
demons obey us when we use your name!”
5. Motivated by Love
1 Corinthians 13:3 If
I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast
about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.
Galatians 5:13 For you
have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use
your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve
one another in love.
6. The Measure of
Greatness
Matthew 20:26-28 But
among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be
your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first among you must become
your slave. 28 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to
serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
7. Faith Justified by
Service
James 2:20-26 How
foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless?
21 Don’t
you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his
actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see, his
faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith
complete. 23 And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham
believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.”He was
even called the friend of God. 24 So you see, we are shown to be
right with God by what we do, not by faith alone.
25 Rahab
the prostitute is another example. She was shown to be right with God by her
actions when she hid those messengers and sent them safely away by a different
road. 26Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead
without good works.
8. A Saving Service
1 Corinthians 9:22 When
I am with those who are weak, I share their weakness, for I want to bring the
weak to Christ. Yes, I try to find common ground with everyone, doing
everything I can to save some.
James 5:20 you can be
sure that whoever brings the sinner back will save that person from death and
bring about the forgiveness of many sins.
9. Acknowledged by Christ
Matthew 25:40 “And the
King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these
my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’
Mark 9:41 If anyone
gives you even a cup of water because you belong to the Messiah, I tell you the
truth, that person will surely be rewarded.
10. Reward of Faithful
Service
Matthew 25:21 “The master
was full of praise. ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been
faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more
responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!
John 4:36 The
harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they harvest is people brought to
eternal life. What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike!
Daniel 12:3 Those who
are wise will shine as bright as the sky, and those who lead many to
righteousness will shine like the stars forever.
