1. Necessity of Repentance
Luke 13:3 Not at all!
And you will perish, too, unless you repent of your sins and turn to God.
Acts 3:19 Now repent
of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away.
2. The Time for Repentance
2 Corinthians 6:2 For
God says,“At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of
salvation, I helped you.” Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of
salvation.
3. Christ's Call to
Sinners
Luke 5:32 I have come to call not those who think they are
righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.”
4. What True Repentance
Involves
a. Acknowledgment of the
enormity of sin
Psalms 51:4 Against
you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your
sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment
against me is just.
b. Godly sorrow for sin
2 Corinthians 7:9 Now
I am glad I sent it, not because it hurt you, but because the pain caused you
to repent and change your ways. It was the kind of sorrow God wants his people
to have, so you were not harmed by us in any way.
c. Forsaking Sin
Isaiah 55:7 Let the
wicked change their ways and banish the very thought of doing
wrong. Let them turn to the Lord that he may have mercy on
them. Yes, turn to our God, for he will forgive generously.
Ezekiel 18:31 Put all
your rebellion behind you, and find yourselves a new heart and a new spirit.
For why should you die, O people of Israel?
Matthew 3:8 Prove by
the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God.
5. God's Gracious
Assurance
Isaiah 1:18 “Come now,
let’s settle this,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like
scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though
they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool.
Ezekiel 18:21 But if
wicked people turn away from all their sins and begin to obey my decrees and do
what is just and right, they will surely live and not die.
Acts 2:38 Peter
replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized
in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
1 John 1:9 But if we
confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to
cleanse us from all wickedness.
