1. The Ministerial Office
1 Corinthians 4:1 So
look at Apollos and me as mere servants of Christ who have been put in charge
of explaining God’s mysteries.
Ephesians 4:11 Now
these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the
evangelists, and the pastors and teachers.
1 Timothy 3:1 This is
a trustworthy saying: “If someone aspires to be an elder, he desires an
honorable position.”
Titus 1:5 I left you
on the island of Crete so you could complete our work
there and appoint elders in each town as I instructed you.
2. Qualifications
Titus 1:6-9 An elder
must live a blameless life. He must be faithful to his wife, and his
children must be believers who don’t have a reputation for being wild or
rebellious. 7 For an elder must live a blameless life. He must
not be arrogant or quick-tempered; he must not be a heavy
drinker, violent, or dishonest with money. 8 Rather, he must
enjoy having guests in his home, and he must love what is good. He must live
wisely and be just. He must live a devout and disciplined life. 9 He
must have a strong belief in the trustworthy message he was taught; then he
will be able to encourage others with wholesome teaching and show those who
oppose it where they are wrong.
3. The Call
Acts 26:16 Now get to
your feet! For I have appeared to you to appoint you as my servant and witness.
You are to tell the world what you have seen and what I will show you in the
future.
1 Timothy 4:14 Do not
neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecy spoken over you
when the elders of the church laid their hands on you.
4. The Divine Comission
Matthew 28:19-20 Therefore,
go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20Teach these new disciples to
obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you
always, even to the end of the age.”
Acts 6:4 Then we
apostles can spend our time in prayer and teaching the word.”
5. Ambassador for Christ
2 Corinthians 5:20 So
we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for
Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!”
6. Actuated by the Spirit
of Service
Philippians 1:7 So it
is right that I should feel as I do about all of you, for you have a special
place in my heart. You share with me the special favor of God, both in my
imprisonment and in defending and confirming the truth of the Good News.
1 Thessalonians 2:8 We
loved you so much that we shared with you not only God’s Good News but our own
lives, too.
7. An Example to Others
Titus 2:7 And you
yourself must be an example to them by doing good works of every kind. Let
everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching.
1 Peter 5:3 Don’t lord
it over the people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good
example.
2 Corinthians 6:3 We
live in such a way that no one will stumble because of us, and no one will find
fault with our ministry.
8. Watchful of Certain
Evils
Acts 20:33 I have
never coveted anyone’s silver or gold or fine clothes.
2 Corinthians 4:8-9 We
are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are
perplexed, but not driven to despair. 9 We are hunted down, but never
abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed.
2 Timothy 2:4 Soldiers
don’t get tied up in the affairs of civilian life, for then they cannot please
the officer who enlisted them.
9. Carelessness Condemned
Jeremiah 48:10 Cursed
are those who refuse to do the Lord’s work, who hold back their swords
from shedding blood!
10. The Great Reward
Daniel 12:3 Those who
are wise will shine as bright as the sky, and those who lead many to
righteousness will shine like the stars forever.
