1. The First Instance
Genesis
3:6 The woman was convinced. She saw that
the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the
wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she
gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.
2. Forbidden
Exodus
20:17 “You must not covet your neighbor’s
house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or
donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.”
Romans
13:14 Instead, clothe yourself with the
presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to
indulge your evil desires.
3. A Characteristic of
the Natural Man
John
8:44 For you are the children of your father
the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from
the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him.
When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the
father of lies.
1
John 2:16 For the world offers
only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and
pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but
are from this world.
4. Forms of Lust
1
Peter 4:3 You have had enough in
the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy—their immorality and
lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible
worship of idols.
James 4:1-3 What is
causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil
desires at war within you? 2 You want what you don’t have, so you
scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t
get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have
what you want because you don’t ask God for it. 3 And even when you
ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong—you want only what
will give you pleasure.
Romans
1:29 Their lives became full of every kind of
wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious
behavior, and gossip.
5. Domination of Lust
Romans
1:24-25 So God abandoned them
to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile
and degrading things with each other’s bodies. 25 They traded the
truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created
instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.
6. Its Vicious Effects
Mark
4:19 but all too quickly the message is
crowded out by the worries of this life, the lure of wealth, and the desire for
other things, so no fruit is produced.
