1. The Spirit of True
Liberality
Isaiah 32:8 But
generous people plan to do what is generous, and they stand firm in their
generosity.
Proverbs 22:9 Blessed
are those who are generous, because they feed the poor.
Romans 12:8 If your
gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously.
If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And
if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.
2 Corinthians 9:7 You
must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or
in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”
2. The Basic Motive
1 Corinthians 13:3 If
I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast
about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.
3. The duty of the Rich
1 Timothy 6:17-18 Teach
those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their
money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives
us all we need for our enjoyment. 18 Tell them to use their money to
do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need,
always being ready to share with others.
4. Unpretentious Giving
Matthew 6:1 “Watch
out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will
lose the reward from your Father in heaven.
5. Blessings that Accrue
to Liberality
Proverbs 3:9-10 Honor
the Lord with your wealth and with
the best part of everything you produce. 10 Then he will fill your barns
with grain, and your vats will overflow with good wine.
Proverbs 11:25 The
generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.
Proverbs 28:27 Whoever
gives to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to
poverty will be cursed.
