1. The Beginning of Law
Genesis 2:16-17 But
the Lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in
the garden—17 except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you
eat its fruit, you are sure to die.”
Romans 5:13 Yes,
people sinned even before the law was given. But it was not counted as sin
because there was not yet any law to break.
Romans 7:7 Well then,
am I suggesting that the law of God is sinful? Of course not! In fact, it was
the law that showed me my sin. I would never have known that coveting is wrong
if the law had not said, “You must not covet.”
2. Divinely Communicated
through Moses
Leviticus 26:46 These
are the decrees, regulations, and instructions that the Lord gave through
Moses on Mount Sinai as evidence of the
relationship between himself and the Israelites.
Acts 7:38 Moses was
with our ancestors, the assembly of God’s people in the wilderness, when the
angel spoke to him at Mount Sinai. And there
Moses received life-giving words to pass on to us.
3. Preserved in the ARK
Exodus 25:16 When the
Ark is finished, place inside it the stone tablets inscribed with the terms of
the covenant, which I will give to you.
4. To be Taught by the
Priests
Leviticus 10:11 And you must teach the Israelites
all the decrees that the Lord has given them through Moses.”
Ezra 7:10 This was because Ezra had determined to study and
obey the Law of the Lord and to teach those decrees and regulations to the
people of Israel.
5. Obedience to the Law
Required
Deuteronomy 4:40 If
you obey all the decrees and commands I am giving you today, all will be well
with you and your children. I am giving you these instructions so you will
enjoy a long life in the land the Lord your God is giving you for all
time.”
Joshua 1:7 Be strong
and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do
not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you
will be successful in everything you do.
6. For the Government of
the Nation
Deuteronomy 17:18-19
“When he sits on the throne as king, he must copy for himself this body of
instruction on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical
priests. 19 He must always keep that copy with him and read it daily
as long as he lives. That way he will learn to fear the Lord his God by
obeying all the terms of these instructions and decrees.
7. The Shadow, Not the
Substance
Hebrews 10:1 The old
system under the law of Moses was only a shadow, a dim preview of the good
things to come, not the good things themselves. The sacrifices under that
system were repeated again and again, year after year, but they were never able
to provide perfect cleansing for those who came to worship.
8. Fulfilled by Christ
Matthew 5:17 “Don’t
misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or
the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.
Romans 10:4 For Christ
has already accomplished the purpose for which the law was given. As a
result, all who believe in him are made right with God.
9. Superseded by the
Gospel
Luke 16:16 “Until John
the Baptist, the law of Moses and the messages of the prophets were your
guides. But now the Good News of the Kingdom
of God is preached, and
everyone is eager to get in.
John 1:7 to tell about
the light so that everyone might believe because of his testimony.
Galatians 2:21 I do
not treat the grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us
right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.
