1. Forbidden by the First
Commandment
Exodus 20:3-5 “You
must not have any other god but me. 4 “You must not make for
yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the
earth or in the sea. 5 You must not bow down to them or worship them,
for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your
affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their
children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth
generations of those who reject me.
2. Punishable by Death
Deuteronomy 13:10
Stone the guilty ones to death because they have tried to draw you away from
the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of
slavery.
3. The Foolishness of Idol
Worship
1 Kings 18:27 About
noontime Elijah began mocking them. “You’ll have to shout louder,” he scoffed,
“for surely he is a god! Perhaps he is daydreaming, or is relieving himself. Or
maybe he is away on a trip, or is asleep and needs to be wakened!”
4. Disobeying a King's
Decree
Daniel 3:17-18 f we
are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us.
He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty. 18 But even if he
doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never
serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.”
5. An Apostolic Injunction
1 Corinthians 10:14
So, my dear friends, flee from the worship of idols.
1 Corinthians 10:20
No, not at all. I am saying that these sacrifices are offered to demons, not to
God. And I don’t want you to participate with demons.
