Lesson Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to teach that faith is
not something we practice on Sunday by going to church or saying our goodnight
prayers but a way of life that infects every aspect of our daily routines. It is the rock that provides forgiveness for
the past, guidance for today and hope for the future. It is Christian faith that causes us to
adhere to the teachings of the Bible as a rule book for living our lives. It is not based on blind belief but
historical facts as related in the Scriptures, the external and internal
inspiration of the Scriptures and the experience of living a Christ center life
based on faith.

Defined: Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will
actually happen. In a religious sense
faith is applied particularly to God or to Christ, the author and finisher of
our faith. Belief generally indicates
intellectual assent to the evidence establishing the claims of the Scriptures.
Faith implies a confidence or trust which comes after the belief has been
established
Faith Defined
Heb. 11:1 Faith is the
confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance
about things we cannot see.
2
Cor. 5:7 For we live by believing and not by seeing.
2
Cor. 4:18 So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our
gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be
gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.
Romans
8:23-25 And we believers also groan, even though we have the Holy Spirit within
us as a foretaste of future glory, for we long for our bodies to be released
from sin and suffering. We, too, wait with eager hope for the day when God will
give us our full rights as his adopted children, including the new bodies he
has promised us. 24 We were given this hope when we were saved. (If we already
have something, we don’t need to hope for it. 25 But if we look forward to
something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.)
1
Cor. 2:9-16 That is what the Scriptures mean when they say, “No eye has seen,
no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for
those who love him.”
Faith the Way to God
Heb
11:6 And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come
to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely
seek him.
1
John 3:23 And this is his commandment: We must believe in the name of his Son,
Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as he commanded us.
John
3:36 And anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life. Anyone who doesn’t
obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry
judgment.”
Faith by the Word
Romans
10:17 So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.
John
20:31 But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is
the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by
the power of his name.
1
John 5:9-11 Since we believe human testimony, surely we can believe the greater
testimony that comes from God. And God has testified about his Son. 10 All who
believe in the Son of God know in their hearts that this testimony is true.
Those who don’t believe this are actually calling God a liar because they don’t
believe what God has testified about his Son.
11
And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life
is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son
does not have life.
4. Elements of Genuine
Faith
Romans
10:9-10 If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your
heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by
believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by
confessing with your mouth that you are saved.
James
2:17-20 So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good
deeds, it is dead and useless. 18 Now someone may argue, “Some people have
faith; others have good deeds.” But I say, “How can you show me your faith if
you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds.” 19
You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you!
Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror. 20 How foolish! Can’t
you see that faith without good deeds is useless?
Made Right with God by
Faith
John
3:16 For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that
everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
Romans
3:28 So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law.
Galatians
3:11 So it is clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep
the law. For the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person
has life.”
Romans
5:1 Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have
peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.
6. Living and Conquering
by Faith
Ephesians
3:12 Because of Christ and our faith in him, we can now come boldly and
confidently into God’s presence.
John
8:31-32 Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my
disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. 32 And you will know the
truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Mk
11:22-24 Then Jesus said to the disciples, “Have faith in God. 23 I tell you
the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into
the sea,’ and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and
have no doubt in your heart. 24 I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if
you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.
Hebrews13:5-6
Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I
will never fail you. I will never abandon you.” 6 So we can say with
confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can
mere people do to me?”
7. Examples of Faith
Hebrews
11:4 It was by faith that Abel brought a more acceptable offering to God than
Cain did. Abel’s offering gave evidence that he was a righteous man, and God
showed his approval of his gifts. Although Abel is long dead, he still speaks
to us by his example of faith.
Hebrews
11:17 It was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice when God was
testing him. Abraham, who had received God’s promises, was ready to sacrifice
his only son, Isaac,
