1. The First Instance
Genesis 3:6 The woman
was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked
delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the
fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he
ate it, too.
2. Induced by Fear and Unbelief
Numbers 14:11 And the
Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt?
Will they never believe me, even after all the miraculous signs I have done
among them?
Numbers 14:22-24 not one of
these people will ever enter that land. They have all seen my glorious presence
and the miraculous signs I performed both in Egypt and in the wilderness, but
again and again they have tested me by refusing to listen to my
voice. 23 They will never even see the land I swore to give their
ancestors. None of those who have treated me with contempt will ever see
it. 24 But my servant Caleb has a different attitude than the others
have. He has remained loyal to me, so I will bring him into the land he
explored. His descendants will possess their full share of that land.
3. A Sacrilegious Act
Leviticus 10:1-2 Aaron’s
sons Nadab and Abihu put coals of fire in their incense burners and sprinkled
incense over them. In this way, they disobeyed the Lord by burning before
him the wrong kind of fire, different than he had commanded. 2 So
fire blazed forth from the Lord’s presence and burned them up, and they died
there before the Lord.
4. Disobedience of Lot's
Wife
Genesis 19:17 When they were
safely out of the city, one of the angels ordered, “Run for your lives! And
don’t look back or stop anywhere in the valley! Escape to the mountains, or you
will be swept away!”
Genesis 19:26 But
Lot’s wife looked back as she was following behind him, and she turned into a
pillar of salt.
5. The Defection of Moses
Numbers 20:10 Then he and
Aaron summoned the people to come and gather at the rock. “Listen, you rebels!”
he shouted. “Must we bring you water from this rock?”
Numbers 20:11 Then Moses
raised his hand and struck the rock twice with the staff, and water gushed out.
So the entire community and their livestock drank their fill.
Numbers 20:12 But the
Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust me enough to
demonstrate my holiness to the people of Israel, you will not lead them into
the land I am giving them!”
6. Refusing to Execute a Divine Commission
Jonah 1:2-3 “Get up
and go to the great city of Nineveh.
Announce my judgment against it because I have seen how wicked its people
are.” 3 But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction to get
away from the Lord. He went down to the port of Joppa,
where he found a ship leaving for Tarshish. He bought a ticket and went on
board, hoping to escape from the Lord by sailing to Tarshish.
7. A King's Presumption
1 Samuel 13:9-13 So he
demanded, “Bring me the burnt offering and the peace offerings!” And Saul
sacrificed the burnt offering himself. 10 Just as Saul was finishing
with the burnt offering, Samuel arrived. Saul went out to meet and welcome
him, 11 but Samuel said, “What is this you have done?”
Saul replied, “I saw my men scattering from me, and you didn’t
arrive when you said you would, and the Philistines are at Micmash ready for
battle. 12 So I said, ‘The Philistines are ready to march against us
at Gilgal, and I haven’t even asked for the Lord’s help!’ So I felt compelled
to offer the burnt offering myself before you came.” 13 “How
foolish!” Samuel exclaimed. “You have not kept the command the Lord your
God gave you. Had you kept it, the Lordwould have established your kingdom over
Israel
forever.
8. Inevitable Consequence of Disobedience
Deuteronomy 30:17-18 17 “But
if your heart turns away and you refuse to listen, and if you are drawn away to
serve and worship other gods, 18 then I warn you now that you will
certainly be destroyed. You will not live a long, good life in the land you are
crossing the Jordan
to occupy.
