1. The Nature of
John's Baptism
Matthew 3:11 “I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to
God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that
I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you
with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
Acts
19:2-5 “Did you
receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” he asked them. “No,” they
replied, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 “Then what
baptism did you experience?” he asked. And they replied, “The baptism of
John.” 4 Paul said, “John’s baptism called for repentance from sin.
But John himself told the people to believe in the one who would come later,
meaning Jesus.” 5 As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the
name of the Lord Jesus.
2. Institution
of Christian Baptism
Matthew
28:19 Therefore, go and make disciples
of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and
the Holy Spirit.
3. Relation of
Repentance and Faith to Baptism
Mark
16:16 Anyone who believes and is
baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned.
Acts
2:38 Peter replied, “Each of you must
repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus
Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the
Holy Spirit.
4. Spiritual
Significance of Baptism
Romans
6:3-4 Or have you forgotten that when
we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his
death? 4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just
as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we
also may live new lives.
5. Baptism of
the Holy Spirit
Acts
1:5 John baptized with[a] water,
but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
Acts
10:45-47 The Jewish
believers who came with Peter were amazed that the gift of the Holy Spirit
had been poured out on the Gentiles, too.46 For they heard them speaking
in tongues and praising God. Then Peter asked, 47 “Can anyone
object to their being baptized, now that they have received the Holy Spirit
just as we did?”
Acts
8:18 When Simon saw that the Spirit
was given when the apostles laid their hands on people, he offered them money
to buy this power.
